Third T20I India Take 2-1 Series Lead Over Zimbabwe With All-Round Performance

With an outstanding all-around effort in the third match of the T20I series, India has seized a critical 2-1 series lead over Zimbabwe. This triumph establishes India’s supremacy and paves the way for a thrilling series finale.

India defeated Zimbabwe by 23 runs in the third Twenty20 match on Wednesday in Harare thanks to some excellent performances from Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad, followed by the bowlers doing their bit. Zimbabwe chose to bat first on a new surface.

Thus, Gill (66 off 49), Yashasvi Jaiswal (36 off 27), and Gaikwad (49 off 28) drove India to 182 for four against them. Despite a fun effort from number four Dion Myers (65 not out 49), Zimbabwe never really had a chance to chase down runs, finishing at 159 for six in their allotted 20 overs.

After Ravindra Jadeja’s retirement, Washington Sundar—expected to be a greater part of India’s Twenty20 squad—scored three times while Avesh Khan claimed two wickets.

On Saturday, July 13, the series’ fifth and final Twenty20 match will occur here. Following a defeat in the first match of the series, India has won two straight to resume normal operations.

Following Wessly Madhevere’s dismissal by Avesh Khan in the second over, the home team continued to pick up wickets. Zimbabwe lost their first five wickets for 39 runs but did well to right the ship. The game was given much-needed life by Myers and Clive Madande’s 77-run stand off 57 balls (37 off 26).

The Gill-led Indian team had previously made some intriguing selections. As expected, they left out players like Riyan Parag in the middle order and included World Cup champions Jaiswal, Sanju Samson (12 not out of 7) and Shivam Dube in the starting eleven.

Sanju batted at number five, with Jaiswal, Gill, Abhishek Sharma (10 off 9) and Gaikwad, the four specialist openers, filling the first four spots.

Having been left out of India’s victorious T20 World Cup campaign, Jaiswal was delighted to be back in the middle and went straight after his shots.

The opening over, delivered by off-spinner Brian Bennett, saw the southpaw take two fours and a six over deep-midwicket to establish the tone.

Gill took left-arm pacer Richard Ngarava for a beautiful on drive to start the innings, then pulled him for a six over fine-leg.

To put it mildly, Zimbabwe’s performance on the field was poor, as they let up extra runs and routinely failed to make catches during the innings. Once again, pacer Blessing Muzarabani (2/25), the best bowler, benefited from extra bounce because of his length.

India could not sustain their pace and reached 55 in the powerplay with both openers in the middle after sprinting to 49 for no loss in four overs.

The breakthrough for Zimbabwe was achieved by captain Sikandar Raza, who once again showed his skill with the ball when Jaiswal’s reverse sweep found its way directly into the clutches of the fielder at the backward point.

Abhishek, the centurion from the previous round, was quickly dispatched by Raza and went into hiding.

Despite being in an uncommon batting position, Gaikwad scored four boundaries and three sixes by exploiting the spinners in the middle overs.
