India’s victory in the Twenty20 International Series in Zimbabwe has heightened contention for the opening berths, which can only be a “good thing” for competitor Shubman Gill.
The selectors will face many challenges when choosing the openers for the Sri Lanka series after Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s departure from T20Is. India will play a three-match ODI series after a three-match T20I series that begins in Pallekele on July 27.
Gill was the top run scorer in the five-match series in Harare. He is scheduled to begin alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal in the three Twenty20 Internationals in Sri Lanka later this month. He was designated as the traveling reserve and did not make the Indian squad of fifteen for the T20 World Cup.
For most of the series, India had four openers in the playing XI, and Gill, Jaiswal, Abhishek Sharma, and Ruturaj Gaikwad all performed admirably.
Gill captained India’s reserve side in all five matches and opened the batting. Jaiswal joined Gill at the top of the order starting in the third game.
He opened with colleague Abhishek Sharma of Punjab, who hit a hundred and fifty in his debut series for the first two games. With 170 runs from five games, Gill was the highest-scoring opener among the four; nevertheless, his strike rate was the lowest, at 125.92. Jaiswal, Gaikwad, and Abhishek finished with 141 runs in three matches at 165.88, 133 runs in four games at 158.33, and 124 runs in five matches at 174.64.

“We were under a little strain after the first match’s loss. Playing back-to-back games takes time and effort. Thus, the series was set up so there would be two back-to-back games, followed by a few days off and then back-to-back games.
“It’s never easy playing a series like that, but how we returned after losing the first T20I was remarkable.
After losing the series’ first game, India came back to win 4-1.
“Seeing everyone hungry and quickly adapting to the situation and assessing the conditions was truly spectacular to watch,” Gill said.
The opener felt that caution was necessary early in the innings due to the movement of the ball during the power play.
“I believe there were some difficult conditions for the wicket, particularly during the power play, when the ball was constantly moving in some way. My goal as an opening batsman was to go through four to five overs without giving up a wicket,” he continued.
