Afghan student Basit Wali Hotak traveled hundreds of miles over the course of an overnight trip to Kabul on Thursday to see his idol, Rashid Khan, play cricket at home. On Wednesday night, Hotak departed from the southern city of Kandahar and arrived in Kabul by 6 am (0130 GMT). He slept for just one hour before he had to get to the stadium.

Hotak was only one of many who traveled great distances on dilapidated, accident-prone roads, spending what little money they had on the 50 Afghani (seventy-cent) tickets.

Former captain and allrounder Mohammad Nabi took to the pitch, squaring off against his son, Hassan Eisakhil, who both donning “Number 7” jerseys.
The presence of Afghan national players in the Shpageeza league after several years further heightened fans’ hopes that international teams may play in Afghanistan.
The lack of recognition of the Taliban regime by other nations makes it difficult for sports teams to compete internationally; however, recently, athletes from different countries have been invited to Afghanistan.
“If they (national players) play games here, the international teams will also come to play here, because it shows security has been ensured,” Abdul Ahad, 19, said.
Another devotee, Kamil Shah Mashal, drove to the capital for hours on end with his pals.
He told AFP, “It is crazy love that has brought us here to Kabul from Khost,” bordered by Pakistan.
“I don’t see any other reason for young people to be happy in the current situation because of the crises that have made some of them flee the country,” he stated.
“The only thing that brings us joy now is cricket.
