The selection struggle between middle-order batsmen KL Rahul and Sarfaraz Khan for the second Test match against New Zealand in Pune remains ongoing, according to India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate on Tuesday. The head coach, Gautam Gambhir, is eager to give the former a long rope.

“In the last Test, Sarfaraz was undoubtedly outstanding. How many balls do you play at (and miss at)? I asked KL after the previous Test. He missed one ball and didn’t play, which usually happens when you don’t score runs.
“KL is batting well and is in a good frame of mind, so there are definitely no worries concerning him. However, for this Test, we will undoubtedly need to fit seven pieces into six spaces. We will then need to assess the field and determine what will be best for the team,” he stated.
KL Rahul stayed off-colour in both essays, but Sarfaraz made 150 runs in the second innings of the Bengaluru match.
Despite acknowledging that it is challenging to exclude Kl Rahul from the Test format, ten Doeschate stated that head coach Gautam Gambhir is “keen to” give him a long rope.

He continued that if it means taking the ball away from the left-hander, we want that option. “We just want to make sure we’re absolutely prepared for conditions here.”
