On Saturday, former India batsman Gautam Gambhir said that he would ‘love to coach the national team’, fueling speculation that he is the front-runner for the high-profile position.
Gambhir recently led the Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL win and is seen as a capable replacement for Rahul Dravid, whose contract ends after the current T20 World Cup.
The deadline to apply for the head coach position was May 27. However, it is still being determined whether Gambhir has submitted his application.
“I’d love to coach the Indian squad. There is no more incredible honour than coaching your national team. At an event in Abu Dhabi, the 42-year-old stated that he represents 140 crore Indians and people worldwide.
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly praised Gambhir for the India head coach position earlier this week, stating “he is a good candidate”.

Gambhir spoke to a group of students at Medeor Hospital in Abu Dhabi during a personal visit.
When one of the students asked him about coaching the Indian cricket team and helping them win the World Cup with his experience, Gambhir replied, “I have not addressed this question, despite many people asking me. But I have to respond to you now.
“140 crore Indians will help India win the World Cup. If everyone starts praying for us and we begin playing and representing them, India will win the World Cup. “The most important thing is to be fearless,” stated Gambhir.
Gambhir, a significant player on the Indian side who won the 2007 World T20 and the 2011 ODI World Cup, was congratulated on his recent achievement with the KKR.
“A secure dressing room is a happy dressing room, which leads to a winning dressing room. The only thing I did in the KKR was adhere to this mantra. “With God’s grace, it worked,” he stated.
