Wasim Jaffer, a former Indian cricketer, believes Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal should open for the Men in Blue in the forthcoming T20 World Cup 2024.
Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer believes that Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal should be India’s opening duo in the 2017 T20 World Cup. Jaffer feels that this combination will provide the ideal balance of experience and youthful vitality, which is critical in the high-pressure setting of the World Cup.
The ICC T20 World Cup will occur in the West Indies and the United States from June 1 to 29. The Men in Blue will face Bangladesh in their only warm-up game on June 1 at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.
Jaffer took to his official X account and stated that Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav should bat third and fourth, respectively. The veteran Indian cricketer praised Rohit for his ability to play spin well.
“In my opinion, Kohli and Jaiswal should open in the World Cup. Rohit and Sky should bat third and fourth, depending on the start we get. Rohit plays spin quite well, so batting at four should not be an issue,” Jaffer commented on X.
India’s T20 World Cup campaign will begin on June 5 against Ireland at the newly constructed Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.
Meanwhile, the highly anticipated blockbuster battle between India and Pakistan will occur on June 9. They will then play tournament co-hosts in the United States (June 12) and Canada (June 15) to complete their Group A fixtures.
India will be looking to break their ICC trophy drought, having last won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013.
Since then, India has reached the 50-over World Cup final in 2023, the semifinals in 2015 and 2019, the title clash of the ICC World Test Championship in 2021 and 2023, the T20 World Cup final in 2014, and the semifinals in 2016 and 2022, but has yet to win a major ICC trophy.
Jaffer stated that Virat Kohli’s extensive experience and proven track record in international cricket make him an ideal choice for opening the innings. Virat Kohli’s ability to anchor the innings and accelerate when necessary is invaluable to the squad. Furthermore, Kohli’s experience with the stresses of World Cup conditions can bring consistency to the top of the lineup.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, one of Indian cricket’s rising stars, has demonstrated extraordinary form and talent in recent domestic and international matches. Jaiswal’s aggressive batting style and fearless attitude can complement Kohli’s more controlled approach, resulting in a dynamic opening duo. His ability to face bowlers from the start can create a good tone for the rest of the innings.
Jaffer also noted that having a left-right combination at the top can benefit India by making it harder for bowlers to get into a routine. This strategic edge, combined with Virat Kohli and Jaiswal’s particular abilities, can give India a robust platform in the powerplay overs.
Finally, Wasim Jaffer recommends Virat Kohli and Jaiswal as openers in the T20 World Cup based on experience, current form, and strategic considerations. If executed, this partnership might give India a great start and improve its chances of winning the event.
