Pacer Mohammed Shami is willing to play local cricket if necessary and is committed to fully recovering from his ankle surgery in order to rejoin the Indian team.
Shami’s ankle injury, which required surgery earlier this year, kept him out of action until the 2023 ODI World Cup final. After the protracted layoff, his return date is yet unknown.
Speaking on Saturday at the annual awards event of the Cricket Association of Bengal in Kolkata, where he received recognition for his outstanding achievements, Shami stated that he wanted to be completely fit before returning to the Indian side.
“I am working hard to return soon, as I know I have been away from the game for a while,” said Koshish Jaldi. “Kyun ke main janta hoon kaafi time ho gaya hai team se bahar rehte hue.”
But I want to make sure there’s no pain when I get back. To avoid any inconvenience, I need to improve my fitness,” the quick bowler remarked.
“It is better for me the stronger I return. Whether against Bangladesh, New Zealand, or the Australia series, I don’t want to rush things and run the risk of getting hurt again. Although I’ve already started bowling, I won’t risk anything until I’m completely fit.”
Shami is recovering and is expected to play competitive cricket again for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy. He may even play for India in the Test series against New Zealand.
Bengal’s initial Ranji matches against Uttar Pradesh (October 11) and Bihar (October 18) are expected to feature Mohammed Shami in one or both of them.
Before returning to the international arena, the 34-year-old said he is prepared to test himself in domestic competitions.
“I will play domestic cricket if necessary to gauge my fitness level. Regardless of the opposition or format, what matters most is that I am prepared for whatever comes next,” Shami continued.
Shami is anticipated to play a significant role in India’s preparations for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which begins in November and consists of five Test matches against Australia.
“We are the favorites; Australia should be worried,” Shami remarked in response to a question regarding the highly anticipated series.
Even though Shami was born in Uttar Pradesh, the CAB acknowledged his lengthy connection to Bengal cricket.
“I claim that I was made in Bengal but born in UP. Shami remarked, I appreciate Bengal’s love and support during this more than 20-year journey.
