Swapnil Singh of RCB, an IPL late bloomer, almost quit to play in the Bangladesh League.

Following a discussion with coach Irfan Pathan, who persuaded him to remain rather than travel to Bangladesh, Swapnil Singh accepted an offer from LSG to bowl in the nets.

At 33 years old, Swapnil Singh has one of his greatest IPL seasons as a Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) player. A late bloomer in the IPL three years ago, he was on the verge of quitting to play 50-over league cricket in Bangladesh.

The all-rounder with a spin bowling economy rate of 8.76 has claimed six wickets for the RCB and has occasionally started the bowling. After finishing last in the league, RCB won six straight games to earn a spot in the playoffs. He participated in all of those games. Although Swapnil has played for IPL teams before, this is the first time he has had a sustained run and an impact.

Swapnil made his IPL debut for the Punjab Kings in 2016. The following year, he played two matches for the Lucknow SuperGiants (LSG). He started for LSG as a net bowler.

Coach Andy Flower first noticed the former Baroda all-rounder during LSG practice sessions two years ago.

Swapnil was given another opportunity to establish himself in the IPL when the Zimbabwean joined RCB at the beginning of this season. Swapnil’s career has improved almost twenty years after his first-class debut at fourteen. Swapnil was Virat Kohli’s roommate while they were both India Under-19 cricket players, and the former captain of India now relies on him as a comrade in the RCB lineup.

“I’m happy to see that my brother is receiving what is rightfully his.” He took a very long time. He has demonstrated the value of perseverance,” Jyotsnil, Swapnil’s younger brother, remarked.

The brothers relocated from Lucknow to Baroda when Jyotsnil was three, and Swapnil was eleven. Their father made the choice, thinking their cricketing prospects would be better outside their home state, which is not generally recognized for awarding merit.

Swapnil moved to Uttarakhand after playing for Baroda for more than ten years. Baroda appeared to have reached a career plateau in 2021 and was searching for new challenges.

Mentor Irfan

He was not a regular in the IPL. At that time, he considered relocating to Bangladesh.

His mentor, former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan, gave him wise counsel that convinced him to stay.

Deepak Hooda, a close friend and teammate from Baroda, called him up to play net bowling for LSG. When an IPL team offered him a net bowler, he was upset and ended the call the first time. Hooda, however, called back and reiterated that it was a wise decision. But it took some time for LSG to confirm.

He was undecided and conflicted. One offer to play league cricket in Bangladesh was extended to him. Pathan told this newspaper that he believed he would have benefited more from the experience than from playing net bowling in the IPL.

A week passed without an update from LSG. Swapnil called Pathan once more, and he revealed it to RCB Bold Diaries. Pathan then called Gautam Gambir, his old colleague from India and LSG mentor.

I said to Gautam, “Tu dekh le ek baar is ladke ko?” when I phoned him. (Look at this boy) Gautam replied, “Okay, I’ll do it since you asked me to. Tu bol raha hai toh theek hai.” After being chosen, he met Andy Flower, who was impressed by his demeanor, according to Pathan.

Swapnil was requested to come for tryouts after Flower transferred to RCB.

Before my selection in the auction, RCB conducted a trial-turned-camp. In our conversation, I told Andy everything about my (domestic) season. Please give me one chance, I said to him. This could be my last opportunity. Trust me,” Swapnil said to RCB Bold Diaries.

However, when RCB passed on him in the first round of the auctions, Swapnil believed he had reached a roadblock. “I didn’t want to play for the rest of my life, so I thought I would play out the current domestic season and, if necessary, end my career after playing the next season,” he stated. His luck changed, though, when RCB eventually purchased him.

“When one works hard and exerts themselves, they will eventually be rewarded,” as the saying goes, and Swapnil is the ideal example for others to follow. Everyone hears about famous cricket players, but players like Swapnil also have unique stories that may motivate many people. Pathan continued.

When the RCB takes on the Rajasthan Royals in the Eliminator on Wednesday, Swapnil’s incredible season will inspire journeyman cricketers to never give up.
